Yes Bay Lodge Fishing Report - August 12, 2009

Wednesday August 12th, 2009 – Fishing Report

Bang up day today, the fish were biting and the dock pictures show it. We had our limit (almost 17 of 18) of salmon before lunch today and most other boats did as well. It was a good morning of fishing. We got quite a few nice silvers including a couple big ones. And a couple bright pinks.

Then it was off for halibut and we finally managed to find a few small ones, could not find any rockfish today, but with limits of salmon and halibut, we just killed time the rest of the day dragging our baits around looking for rockfish.

Several boats went to Bell and fished for Kings and managed to hook a few, couple too small and a couple got away but one nice one hit the dock, so it was a really good day of fishing at Yes Bay Lodge in SE Alaska!!

Yes Bay Lodge Fishing Report - August 11th, 2009

Tuesday August 11th, 2009 – Fishing Report

Dreary cloudy and rainy day…but the fishing wasn’t bad, not great, but not bad. Salmon were around, but it was a slow bite. We managed our limit (except 2) before lunch then spent the rest of the day bottom fishing…the salmon bite slowed so we figured, hit the bottom for a few hours. Nothing there today for any of our boats.

All in all, not a bad day with plenty of nice salmon hitting the docks, but you had to work at it.

Enjoy the pictures,

Yes Bay Lodge Fishing Report - August 10th, 2009

Monday August 10th, 2009 – Fishing Report

Well, we were the only boat out there from the Lodge again today and the salmon fishing seemed to slow a little today. Guests wanted to try for Kings this morning, so we hit Bell Island first thing and nailed a couple which were just a little too small, so we headed for halibut grounds at the tide change and managed one nice big Rockfish…had so much doing that we then headed to my special rockfish hole and nailed some really nice sea bass and a couple big yelloweye snapper, then went to another spot for a try at halibut, no luck. Back to salmon fishing and managed to find one nice pink. Decided to end the day trying again for halibut, but no luck.

Fun time was had by all and we managed to get a decent catch, but we will be hard on the salmon tomorrow morning. Several boats out tomorrow a large group arrived today.

Enjoy the picture,

Yes Bay Lodge Fishing report - August 9th, 2009

Sunday August 9th, 2009 – Fishing Report

Three boats went out today and although it rained all day (good thing) the fishing for salmon was a little slow, although there were limits on all the boats, it was hard work with short bites and plenty of missed fish and long pauses sometimes between bites, but they were there and a bunch of nice pinks, silvers and a few chum hit the dock this afternoon.

Axman continues his streak of halibut with a short 15 minute stop at the mouth to nail a real nice 51 pounder on his way in, so fresh it was still wiggling hanging on the hook.

All in all another great day of fishing and some welcome rain for a huge change, which should help the fishing. It has been so dry this summer, the creeks were drying up with no place for the salmon to go spawn and there was smoke in the air from a number of forest fires in Canada and other parts of Alaska. So the rain is a welcome relief from all the dry hot weather this summer!

Enjoy the pictures,

Yes bay Lodge Fishing report - August 7th, 2009

Friday August 7th, 2009 - Fishing Report

WOW – What can I say – it was a day unlike any other – salmon (not even pinks) were NOT biting. My boat managed to troll for over 4 hours with virtually no bites – did manage a couple really small shakers and 1 nice large silver that came unbuttoned right by the boat, but that was it…and the other two boats out with guests didn’t really fare much better. It was a super slow salmon fishing day.

Weather change in store – which could have been the problem. Rainy clouds and some wind today as a front starts to move through and weather may turn to normal, as opposed to the hot sunny weather we have been having.

Batman Scores Big with “Office Girl”!!

One crew boat out today and they hit a homerun! Sharon one of the girls who works in the office at the Lodge desperately wanted to catch a Red Snapper (Yellow Eye) so she could retrieve the ear bones for some ear rings! So out she went with Batman on a mission – First she landed a nice silver salmon ( only one of the day ) then off to a secret yellow eye hole and on her second drop to over 400 feet within 10 seconds she had one on. She reeled and reeled and up it came and to her amazement it was her beloved yellow eye! See pictures! Then they went halibut fishing and she managed a small one which she released! Back to the dock before noon. Save the yellow eye until the Professor could dissect the head and retrieve her beloved ear bones!!

Anyway – my boat gave up on salmon about midday and concentrated on some rockfish, but not before hooking a porpoise while trolling for salmon, no harm done to the porpoise and we retrieved all of our line which was nearly spooled. So bottom fishing we managed some real nice yellow eyes, some quill backs and a very nice Ling Cod! We also managed to bring up a sponge and a rock! But that story is for another day, the fast moving sponge was quite a battle!!

Yes Bay Lodge Fishing Report - August 6th, 2009

Thursday August 6, 2009 – Fishing Report

Medium day fishing, the salmon were there but the bite was difficult, slow at times and then a double hook-up, then slow and then another fish or two…spent the morning fishing for salmon almost got our limit then quit and headed for a halibut hole, fished for a few hours with only a few small bites and a couple rockfish. Moved again and hit some nice yelloweyes and rockfish, one last stop for a couple minutes halibut fishing, but none today!

All in all a good day of fishing with plenty of fish on the hooks at the end of the day.

Yes Bay Lodge Fishing Report - August 5th, 2009

Wednesday August 5th, 2009 – Fishing Report

Only Boat Out There!

This is a throwback from my Sea Tow days – too many times that is what we heard when going to find someone, they would assure us that they were the only boat out there…well today it seems it was the truth at Yes Bay Lodge, we had a changing of guest day today at the Lodge and my boat was the only boat out there, at least with guests.

Yes I realize there are two pictures in the report this evening, the other picture is of the fish the only other boat out there caught. Yes it was a crew boat on the hunt for halibut – obviously the halibut won – although the stories of the ones that got away reverberated around the dock this afternoon!! Axman, Batman and Kicker took a trip out today to try to catch some halibut, they did NOT succeed.

However, you will note that my people had a full load of salmon today, a couple halibut and some nice rockfish for their efforts! It was a hot and sunny day today, had to be over 80 degrees and blazing sunshine. A light wind this afternoon made it somewhat bearable, but hot nonetheless. Calm seas and beautiful weather, who could ask for more…oh and a boat load of fish! At least on my boat!!

Yes bay Lodge Fishing Report - August 4th, 2009

Tuesday August 4th, 2009 – Fishing Report

Well, the morning started out pretty good for salmon then dried up. We managed a few this morning, but the afternoon went dead, halibut bite shut off and then the salmon bite was dead as well.

Good day fishing, nice weather, sunny and hazy from the forest fire smoke, but warm and sunny with very little winds, so it was calm everywhere.

Enjoy the pictures,

Capt Jim

Yes Bay Lodge Fishing Report - August 3, 2009

Monday August 3rd, 2009 – Fishing Report

Great fishing again today – limits for anyone who wanted it!! Plenty of nice pinks, chum and silver salmon. Halibut fishing was slow for my boat, but a few did manage to hit the dock today. We managed a couple really nice sea bass and a small yelloweye snapper, but Axman had a beautiful 10.5 pound yelloweye which was beautiful.

Another great fishing day at Yes bay Lodge, enjoy the pictures everyone.

Sunday August 2nd 2009 – Fishing Report

Salmon fishing continue to be hot with limits all around for those who want them…plenty of nice pinks, chums and some silvers all hit the dock today. Nice halibut this morning on one boat weighed in at 39.9 pounds.

Warm weather, sunny but a little wind today, so it was a little lumpy coming back and forth from fishing.

Good time had by all, enjoy the pictures of another great day of fishing at Yes Bay Lodge in SE Alaska.
