August 11th - Great Fishing Day and Good Weather!!

The weather was very nice today, overcast with a touch of rain, but only a touch. It was fairly warm with light winds and the fishing was very good!!

The salmon bite was good this morning with limits of pinks and silvers all around. Some real nice silvers are starting to show up and we anticipate a very good silver run this year, we are all looking forward to it!

The bottim fishing was a little more hit and miss, with a few small halibut hitting the dock and a couple yellow eyes and other rockfish, but nothing real big!

Here are the pictures of today's catch!!

How about a beautiful rainbow from the dock!!

August 7th - Crew Day- Office Girl Lands a big one!

On a cold and rainy day, office girl Sharon braved the elements and the guides (She went out with Kicker and Batman) with the sole purpose of landing her first big halibut.

After reeling up two Sculpins she was finally rewarded with a decent bite and went about letting the fish take the bait, setting the hook and reeling a real nice 51 plus pounder all the way up from 307 feet! All by her little self, with no help from either Kicker or Batman other than encouragement. She refused to give up the fight and stuck with it all the way!!

According to Kicker she was squealing with delight the whole way (along with a couple derogatory remarks thrown in for good measure)!!

Here is Sharon with her catch along with her guide Kicker!

Always a good day, even on our days off!!

August 6-9th - A few days off!!

The Lodge is empty for a few days and is getting a much needed cleaning, getting ready for our next set of guests to arrive in a few days!

Captains are all scrubbing boats and getting fishing gear fixed up, the Lodge staff is busy cleaning all the common areas, buffing floors, washing walls and giving the kitchen a good hard cleaning....no idle time is wasted around here!!

So, I figured since we won't have much to report other than some crew fishing, which I hope to have some pictures later today.

Here are a few pics from a recent trip down to Neets Bay Hatchery to see the bears!!

Look for some crew fishing pictures later today or tomorrow!!

We are enjoying the break!!

August 5th - Dockhand Johnson Saves the day!!

It was another tropical sunny day today, not quite as warm as yesterday, but close and in the sun, it was hard to feel the difference, although the wind came up a little this afternoon, which helped, but made it a little lumpy on the ride in!!

Fishing was good, with some real nice fish hitting the dock! A mixture of nice salmon, including a king, some silvers, some chum and a few pinks. There was also a few halibut, and some great yellow eyes, including our biggest to date this year at 14.5 pounds, nice fish!!

But the "catch" of the day belongs to Kevin Johnson who works on the dock at the Lodge, I came in with my guests for lunch and was off loading our catch, including a real nice 28 pound halibut, which missed the bucket and slid off the dock and right into the water, slowly sinking, but Johnson dropped his shorts and dove in after it and managed to catch it before it hit the bottom!! Although he had to go pretty deep to catch it...the amazing thing was that as he surfaced we noticed he still had his lollipop in his mouth, never missed a lick!!

Too bad we don't have any pictures of his feat...but

Here are the pictures from today's catch...

First here is Batman and Batgirl with their catch (Batman had a visitor, his beau from Florida), they went fishing both yesterday and today!

Here are their pictures...

August 4th - Tropical Heat Wave!!

The weather has been unusually hot and clear, blue skies, sunshine and high temperatures! Today it was over 80 degrees at the Lodge and even hotter out in the sun! It was a scorcher...didn't keep everyone from fishing though!

This morning only one guest boat went out, the rest went hiking and fished the stream by the Lodge for catch & release trout!

Kicker and I went out fishing for some halibut for the Lodge, managed a real nice 40 pounder plus a beautiful yellow eye snapper!

This afternoon several boats went out and Slammers boat went after salmon while my boat pounded the bottom for halibut. Slammer got a couple nice pinks and 2 nice King Salmon...my boat managed a couple Pacific Cod and called it an afternoon!

Captain Al and guests managed a good rock fish catch in the morning and a couple nice halibut and a large 10 plus pound yellow eye...

Here are the pictures of today's catch!!

I used a stand in for the photo because Kicker is too ugly!!

August 3rd - Beautiful weather - real warm, light winds

Today was a picture perfect day, the fishing was slow, so 3 boats took the afternoon to head to Neets Bay Hatchery to see some bears! Pics to follow in the next post!

Two boats fished for Kings only this morning and we each managed a nice pink, then my boat hit the bottom looking for some yellow eye snapper and we were successful, managed two real nice ones, both over 8 pounds!

Here are the pictures of today's catch!!

August 2nd - Nice day - Decent fishing!

The salmon bite this morning was not fast and furious, but it remained fairly steady most of the morning, counting the ones that we missed we could have easily caught our limit before lunch, but as it turned out most boats brought in a nice assortment of pinks, chum and a few silvers.

The afternoon we went in search of some large yellow eye snapper and managed 2 nice ones, one at 12 pounds and the other at 10 pounds, very nice. Tried for a halibut but no luck, the salmon bite was still going and there were a few brought in in the afternoon!

Here are the pictures from today's catch!

August 1st - Beautiful Day a little wind and tough fishing!

The clear blue sunny skies today shut the salmon fishing down a bit, this morning it was overcast and the forecast called for rain, so we canceled our beach picnic, then of course the sun came out this afternoon and it got warm and bright! Welcome to Alaska!

Anyway, the fishing for salmon was a little tough today with a very slow bite, if you stuck with it, you were rewarded with some decent fish, including a silver or two, some chum and some real bright pinks.

Bottom fishing was there, but on the small side, but available and always a chance for a big one!!

Only two boats fished today with more guests arriving this afternoon so more boats fishing tomorrow.

Here are the pictures of today's catch!!

Batman and Guests with this afternoons salmon catch!

Some fun and games with some sunglasses for the fish!!

Captain Al (Yea Yea) Bermitz and guests with the days catch!!

So with no picnic, what happened around the Lodge, the crew headed to the beach and fun was had by all!! Yes it was warm enough for some to go for a swim and a little tubing!!

All in all it was a pretty good day at Yes Bay Lodge in SE Alaska!!
